How to know when you are ignoring spending problems

Driving to my favorite fast food restaurant, I ordered the meal I always order from them. When I returned to pay for the meal, the cashier expressed that she has not seem me for some time. Of course, I visit the restaurant often.

I am sort of a head of several restaurants and I feel irritated when people force me out of that office. To me, it is more like a competition to me especially when someone takes the title away from me. This clearly shows that I have a spending problem and there are other more elaborate signs. Below are some signs that most people may not realize as hints that they are spending beyond the watermark.

Real Life seems like “Cheers”

When a sales clerk or a bartender knows your name, it is a bad sign that you are actually overspending. Of course, it feels great when people know you but it is a bad sign when you are known in terms of spending in such a setting.

The issue here is that before you are known in a bar or a store, you must have been visiting it for a long time. This simply shows that you may be spending a lot of time and of course money in such settings and establishments.

The cashier did not know my name at the fast food restaurant but she recognized me. This shows that I have been visiting the restaurants beyond the normal limit. The impact of ordering the same meals each week is felt by my wallet and midsection.

When you are being emailed more often by businesses than friends do

I get up to 100 emails each day and over half of them came from stores and online retailers. These stores send me a lot of emails relating to their coupons and deals. Emails coming from your favorite retail stores are really temptations on their own. To control your spending, you have to get rid of such temptations as much as possible. This can be achieved by deleting the emails, unsubscribing from them and completely staying away from newsletter subscriptions.

Of course, you will miss lots of great deals from these companies but you do not really need these temptations. Online coupons and services offered by websites such as CouponPal, RetailMeNot and so forth could be better options.

When you receive birthday gifts from stores

Until my wife got $50 gift card from Tory Burch, I never know that stores send birthday and Christmas gifts to their best customers. She even told me that her friend got a gift of a fabric made from goat’s soft wool, otherwise known as cashmere blanket, last year from banana republic.  Obviously, you would need to spend a lot of money at a store to get such benefit.

What you should do

If you are a victim of these menaces, then obviously hope is not lost. The first thing to do is to recognize that you have a problem that needs to be tackled. Having recognized that you have a problem of overspending, you have to take some steps to put the situation under control.

  • Note the situations where you overspend and skip them. If you have friends who live beyond their means or you overspend due to peer pressure, try to avoid such scenario.
  • Unsubscribe from each of those email lists that often tempts you to overspend.
  • To make it easier for you, you need to have an accountability partner. This might be your spouse or your best friend.
