Samsung s5, Sony Xperia Z2 and LG G3 are three notable flagship smartphones of 2014 produced by top smartphone companies Samsung, Sony and LG respectively. Of course, these smartphones will each sell in their millions and they are priced fairly equally to each other. However, the biggest challenge is deciding which of the smartphone to purchase over the other. This is a difficult decision to make especially because each of them has top notch features. A careful look at their individual features will reveal areas where each device is better than the other.
- LG G3 – compact polycarbonate body imitating brushed metal coating, 5 colors.
- Galaxy S5 – Plastic indented surface area, 4 colors.
- Xperia Z2 – Aluminum and Glass construction, 3 colors.
The dimensions of the phones are roughly similar to each other. G3 has a dimension of 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9mm, S5 142mm x 72.5mm x 8.1mm and Xperia Z2 146.8mm x 73.3 x 8.2. The weight of Xperia is remarkably higher than the rest two. LG G3 weighs 149 g, Galaxy S5 weighing 145g and Xperia Z2 weighing 163g.
Water resistance seems to be a major feature that ticks in 2014 smartphones. Sony takes the lead in the water resistant feature, followed by Samsung, and of course they are not new to it. Xperia Z2 experienced a remarkable increase in the water resistant technology. With the IP58 technology, Sony ensures superior water resistance feature in Xperia Z2 than the IP67 water resistance feature in Galaxy S5. Sadly LG G3 is not water resistant.

Screen & Display
- LG G3 – 5.5 – inch- 1440p true HD-IPS LCD capacitive touch screen.
- Galaxy S5 – 5.2 – inch -1080p- Super -AMOLED.
- Xperia Z2 – 5.1 – inch- 1080p -Triluminous LCD.
Of the three smartphones, LG G3 has the highest screen size than the rest two. G3 has a screen size of 5.5 inches whereas Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2 have 5.2 and 5.1- inches respectively. The differences in their screen sizes are not quite pronounced. S5 and Z2 have the same resolutions of 1080p. This is where G3 outmatches the two of them. With its 1440p resolution, G3 has a super sharp screen and IPS display. This ensures that G3’s screen looks quite sharper than those of S5 and Z2. However, the three phones are quite excellent when it comes to performance, color accuracy and contrast. The Super-AMOLED of Galaxy S5 is one of the great edges it has. As a result of this, it is able to maintain deep looking blacks in a very dark room.
Storage and SIM
- LG G3 – 32 GB, MicroSD, MicroSDHC, MicroSDXC
- Galaxy S5 – 32 GB, MicroSD, MicroSDHC, MicroSDXC
- Xperia Z2 – 16 GB, MicroSD, MicroSDHC, MicroSDXC
The three flagship smartphones come with high capacity storages. Galaxy S5 comes in two storage types, the 32 GB and the 16 GB storage types. The 32 GB version is a littler pricier than the 16 GB version and obviously a lot of people are going to go for the low-end version. G3 come in 32 GB storage type whereas Xperia Z2 in 16 GB storage. However, the three smartphones allow external storages and you can use expandable memory of up to 128 GB in the smartphones.
CPU, RAM and Performance
- LG G3 – Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 8974-AC 2.5 GHz Quad-core, 3 GB RAM
- Galaxy S5 – Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 MSM8974-AC 2.5 GHz quad-core, 2GB RAM
- Xperia Z2 – Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 MSM8974-AB 2.3 GHz quad-core, 3GB RAM
The three phones have Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 CPUs. This is the latest Snapdragon CUP available, however, it is expected that higher Snapdragon CPUs 805 808 and so forth will soon be released.
It is good to note that the Snapdragon 801 CPUs are nothing short of powerful. They are also superfast smartphone CPU. However, with their 2.5 GHz quad-core LG G3 and Galaxy S5 are faster than Xperia Z2 of 2.3 GHz. However, the speed difference is not really significant. Among the three device, LG G3 stands out in terms of speed and performance. Its 3GB RAM and 2.5 GHz quad-core means that both its performance and speed are excellent. Xperia Z2 also has great performance but at a slightly less speed. Galaxy S5’s performance is good but it is obviously less than that of G3 and Z2.
- LG G3 – 13 – megapixel Dual LED camera.
- Galaxy S5 – 16 – megapixel ISOCELL camera, LED flash, f/2.2
- Xperia Z2 – 20.7 – megapixel sensor, LED flash, f/2.0
The flagship smartphones truly have superb camera. Xperia Z2 is excellent for its 20.7 megapixels camera. However, the device can only take 8 megapixel photos while the remaining megapixels are used in improving the quality of the image as well as its precision and accuracy. This is a wonderful strategy and of course, it is expected because you would not expect a tiny mobile device with low sensor to make use of such resolution. It also comes with a front camera of 2.2 megapixels.
Galaxy S5’s camera is superb with its 16 megapixels and its front camera has 2.1 megapixels. More so, its HDR makes it to stand out above the crowd and make it quite unique in the list of the 2014 super-smartphones. S5’s HDR is quite better than that of Xperia Z2. This is truly expected as Samsung is one of the finest HDR designers in the world.
A lot can be said about the LG G3’s camera. In terms of megapixels, it is the least among the three, having 13 megapixels. However, with the new LG OIS stabilization technology, laser beam focus, two-tone flash and so forth, the performance of the device’s camera is nothing short of exceptional. Just like the rival smartphones, LG G3 has a high dynamic range mode (HDR). Just like Galaxy S5, LG G3 has a front camera of 2.1 megapixels.
- LG G3 – Li – Ion 3000 mAh
- Galaxy S5 – 2800 mAh
- Xperia Z2 – Li – Ion 3200 mAh
The battery strength of the three smartphones reveals that Xperia Z2 has the greatest battery capacity of the three smartphones. However, Samsung S5 has the highest talk time of the three as it can last for 21 hours on talk; the talk time of Z2 is 15 hours whereas that of LG G3 is 6 hours. G3 has a standby time of 12.9 days, Galaxy S5 16.2 days and Xperia Z2 28.8 days. Difference in the talk time and standby time are noticed when the devices are in different connectivity mode such as 3G and 4G.
Making a decision of which smartphone of the three to purchase is not really going to be easy as it is quite obvious that the three devices have top notch features. However, the device you should go for will depend on the feature you actually want. It will also interest you to note that these devices have a slew of applications and software features running in time. They three devices function under Android operating system, more specifically Android 4.4.2 OS. However, Galaxy S5 has Android 4.4.2 Touch Wiz UI. If you are on the lookout for body build and design then G3 and Z2 should be your choice but if you want performance and top features, Galaxy S5 is also a great way to go.
