A music student at Portland State University was found shot dead behind a strip mall near campus on Monday morning, police said. Keenan Harpole, 28, was arrested a short time later and has been charged with murder.
Police said they believe the killing was a random act of violence and that the two did not know each other. Harpole was a former running back for the school’s football team, and authorities said he was previously “involved in altercations with other students.” Harpole’s sister, who also attends Portland State, told reporters that he had mental health issues and had been acting aggressively lately.
The school said in a statement that counseling services were being offered to anyone affected by the “traumatic incident.” Harpole was a member of the team that went undefeated in the 2019 Northwest Conference championship.
The university said it was “shocked and saddened” by the death and said it was canceling Saturday’s football game “out of respect for those affected.”
