LED TVs Are Better
However, let us examine, if Light Emitting Diode or LED TVs are better than their predecessor LCD TVs; if yes, how? LCD TV screens are matrixes of liquid crystal. On passing of electricity through these matrixes, the individual cells within untwist to facilitate filtering of white light emanating from a central source of light behind the screen. Based on the capacity of the cells to untwist, they (cells) filter out light of differing wavelengths, and lead to the creation of different colors. The cells themselves are unable to produce any light under LCD TV system. The source of light in LCD TV is the Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL) which gives rise to two problems. First, they are incapable of producing true blacks such as a black night. The system tries to block all lights, but CCFL being always on, some light passes through the picture, and turns black scene into grey. Second, the saturation of color is limited.
On the other hand, in LED TVs there is no use of a matrix for the creation of the picture. Instead, LED TVs are also a form of LCD TVs, but with a difference. The difference is that LED TVs use a collection of LEDs as their sources of light instead of CCFL as in case of LCD TVs. The advantage of LED source of light lie in the fact that there is a panel dotted with several thousand individual LEDs that can be conveniently dimmed or turned off completely; if need be. The dimming process is referred as localized dimming.

There are two types of LED TVs. The one type is described in the foregoing paragraphs, and the other is referred as edge-lit LED TVs. In an edge-lit LED TV, there is a boarder of LEDs on the outer side of the liquid crystal matrix. The light emanating from this ring of LEDs get diffused with the help of a special panel which provides a uniform light source behind the picture.
The main advantages of LEDs are two. One, one can selectively turn off the areas of LEDs just behind the matrix, and two, the white light emitted by LEDs create a broader spectrum than that created by CCFL. These two characteristics of LED improve picture contrast, and produce richer color experience.
The LED TVs in addition to advantages already mentioned above, are energy efficient, and require 40% less energy than a standard LCD TV. In LCD TVs, the CCFL tubes becoming dimmer in course of time, the picture quality deteriorates. However, it is not so in case of LED TVs. Unlike LCD TVs which use toxic mercury to manufacture CCFL, LED TVs do not contain toxic mercury, and are environment friendly.
LCD TVs have been in the market for long, but if one wants to have a next generation TVs, and blacker black TVs, he should look for LED TVs.
