What is a Tiger Mom?
Tiger parenting refers to a strict, authoritative method of parenting that is meant to raise high-achieving children. This often means forgoing sleepovers, extracurricular activities and limiting media exposure. The term is used to describe aggressive helicopter parenting and comes from an unproven Chinese-medicine treatment dating back to the 1950s in which a person is injected with tiger bone marrow extracts. These injections were claimed by some practitioners to boost immunity and produce cells that could regenerate tissue throughout the body as well as increase life expectancy. Although no scientific study has verified these claims, there are many people who believe them because a teacher at Peking University injected her son with what she thought was tiger bone extract in 1983 and he was able to graduate from college despite suffering from Gaucher disease (an incurable genetic condition). However, it’s important not all tigers are actually endangered but it’s clear that the numbers have dropped due mostly habitat destruction or poaching for their skins or bones for traditional medicines
